I got nothing searching for this, so I may as well just ask it directly. I may have a shot at buying a 7.3l IDI in an '89 that is coupled to an automatic. That is fine for now, but I don't intend to retain the automatic if I have to work on it, I plan to find a manual. What are the chances there is already a place tapped for a pilot bearing, since this truck was equipped with an auto and wouldn't have had need of a pilot bearing? My fingers are crossed, but I'm not holding my breath! The truck is cheap enough I think I would take it anyway if I can, but the ability to swap to a manual later would effect my max $ offer, and what I do with the truck while the trans still functions correctly.
Thankyou for your advice, and time.
I thought the pilot bearing went into the flywheel. The automatic doesnt have the flywheel as you know it, it is a flex plate and has to be replaced if you are going to run manual trans.
Yes. No hard cash, I'll work the truck off by doing some exhaust work, bought it from an uncle. It's been well serviced, and has 233,000 on it. I'm looking for an extended cab w/a 4 or 5 spd that has a blown 6.9/7.3l I can put this engine into. I want to go 2wd and regear for better mileage. Anyway, thankyou for your time, it's given me a direction to go. BTW Dave, you helped me out when I got my last diesel (an '87 dually 6.9l 4spd), I appreciate your knowledge!
