Restoring my `55 back to a six-cylinder. Found a complete 223 and 3 speed from a `62 in junk yard. They tell me it ran when brought in, but it's been sitting open to the elements for 3-4 years.
I would be planning to fully rebuild it, which I'm figuring should cost me about $1000 in parts and some machine shop services.
To my question... they're asking $400 for it (motor and tranny) pulled and loaded in my trailer... does that seem a reasonable price... I dont have a clue... help... thanks...
Offer them $200 and see what they say. If they're willing to wiggle a little on price, you know you can get it cheaper. The worst they can do is say "no". I got my 460 and c6 tranny for $300; the guy was asking $475.
Make sure that it`s not seized and that they will guarantee that it is rebuildable. No need to buy a motor that may need sleeves and extra machine work that can run up the bill too high.
The price isn`t too bad but it is up there. A friend has a complete and running 223/3 speed transmission from a 60 Ford car for $150, hasn`t got a bite yet.
Can you get a motor from Jaspers or someplace like that?
That was going to be my question as well, what is the going price for an already rebuilt short or long block? If all you want it for is a core, that sounds high for a 6-3speed, not especially high on the desired combination list. Might likely find one complete for the effort of hauling it off from someone going to a V-8 hotrod.
Edit: Just saw you are in MI. One sitting out in the elements there for 3-4 yrs may not even be worth hauling away. In my experience Junkyards up north are full of good engine/trannys since the bodies rot away before the engine even gets broken in. Try a search on www.car-part.com to at least see what good running used ones are bringing.
Doesn't sound like too bad of a price . I gave a guy $350 for the 223 with original Fordomatic trans from his 55. He just wanted a bigger motor and trans. setup.
Thanks guys for the input. Checked Jasper and they dont offer the sixs, only the eights ($2100+). Will counteroffer the $300 and see where it goes. I did some other checking around and it seems that nationally the asking price is between $300 and $500, in various conditions, so if I gotta go $400 then I wont feel taken... provided the swing/rotating parts arent completely fused. I'll ask him about a partial refund if that turned out to be the case. I did notice that the carb was covered, and the oil pan drain plug had be removed... perhaps that help to keep her dry inside? The unibody cab and bed appeared fairly rust free so I'm thinkin it may have been low mileage (instruments gone) well care for truck... anything is possible.
I'll post any progress highlites if there's anything to report.
