01 Expy Oil change
01 Expy Oil change
After reading a few posts I think I will go with the full synthetic oil, I do have a few questions tho, we just bought a new TT that has a GVWR of 5000#'s, can I still use 5w-20 or do I need somthing different, and would it be a good idea to change the transmission and rear end to all synthetic also, I did smell some burning this past weekend while pulling it up north. Last one, should I also have a tranny cooler put on?
It is a 5.4L 4x4, not sure of the rear end gear.
Thanks from a newbie!

Tranny cooler is a good idea for sure.
I'd stick to the same weight as recommended in your owner's manual, synthetic or not.
If you go to synthetics for the tranny, rear-end, etc., I'd just wait until it was time to change those fluidds and do it at that time. No sense in wasting time/good fluid/money when you don't have to...
With the factory limited slip, you are supposed to use synthetic in the rear anyways. Not sure about non-limited slip, you may want to check into it as gear lube isn't cheap...but for piece of mind I like to run synthetics.
That smell you got from towing could be any number of things. Hopefully it wasn't overheated tranny fluid...typically, though, you may have a little oil on your engine from a tiny leak or something...and that smell is it burning off due to the increased temps.
You can pull your tranny dipstick and smell it - if it does smell burnt, then by all means change the fluid.

How many miles does your exped have?
I have a 97" exped and used to tow a 27' travel trailer and never have had any
problems with anything, and i have stuck with the manufacturers suggested oils
and changed them in the intravals that they recommend, It currently has just
over 97,000 mi.

Did your truck come with factory tow package? If you have the factory 7 pin harness in the back, then you have the tow package and already have a transmission cooler.
Personally, I would recommend changing the tranny fluid. With a car that tows, expedited fluid changes is the best thing you can do... What is $80 for a fluid change vs $2000 for a rebuild?
For the weight, i wouldnt worry about synthetic fluid in the tranny. My 01 has standard Mercon and my trailer is 6000lbs and it runs like a champ.
PS I never tow more than 1000 miles without changing my oil!!!
