i bought a napa 6637 last night, got home, took the old box off, started to put the new filter in and got the hose over the filter but the clamp will not crank down and when it does, the filter seems to slip right off. is there some technique to make sure the filter stays connected that i am missing? thanks for the help.
It's best to remove the boot that the filter connects to and completely degrease it, as well as the collar that is on the filter. It takes some strong cleaner like denatured alcohol to properly dry up the contact surfaces and provide some friction. Once that is accomplished it's easiest to work your hand down inside the boot and using both hands get the boot installed down to the shoulder. If you are of large stature you might not be able to fit your arm in there and will have to use an alternate method. ( Ask your wife to help ) Once the clamp is tightened install the whole assembly back on the truck.
You may need to use a "clamp extender" in the form of adding a second, smaller, heater hose clamp to the existing one to enable it to get all the way around the boot. My stock one was just a little short once the boot was stretched over the filter neck.
thanks for the input guys. another question for you, what would be the best thing to use for degreasing the tube? so just degreasing it will cause enought friction to hold things together along with the clamp? i also noticed last night that the filter end of the tube has a lip on the inside of it about and 1" or so. looks like this was made to fit perfectly with the factory box, but the 6637 looks like it will fit further back on that tube. should i do anything about that? thanks again
Just run the factory boot down to that 1" shoulder and tighten the clamp. And yes degreasing it is sufficient. I've done that for the past 1.5 years, never had it slip off.
You can also take about 3 inches of 4 inch exhaust pipe and slide it into the filter and then slide into the rubber intake pipe. It makes it easier to move around and doesn't really make it that much longer. It also requires having one more clamp but it sure makes it easier for sure.......Good luck....Dave
I bought a new clamp at Home Depot. It's about a 1/2" longer which helped out alot. FWIW, I lightly sanded the filter where the rubber tube would slip over it to give it some bite. Been working fine for the past few weeks.
I still need to install my filter minder. That damn filter is getting dirty already. Of course I was driving around a dusty/dirty shipyard all day yesterday......
