Timing pointer for 2.3L

Im new to these engines. Is there an aftermarket source for a bolt on timing pointer for the 2.3L engine. I have one all apart at the moment and I would like to get rid of the plastic timing belt cover if possible. I understand I would most likely need a couple seperate pointers, one for the crank and one for the cam, and possibly a third one for the intermediate shaft. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance...

Hi and Welcome to FTE! Please take a moment to check out the Guidelines, they contain important info you'll need when posting on the site:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/guidelines.html

For a good source of aftermarket parts for the 2.3, look to Esslinger engineering or Racer Walsh. These guys race these engines extensively and have for years, and bothe have tones of interesting (and expensive!) stuff for them. Since racers usually remove the timing cover it occurs to me that they might have such a thing as you're looking for.

On Edit:

Esslinger has what they call a Power Pulley which is simply a lightweight pulley that's degree'd all the way around and you can fabricate your own pointer fairly easily to work with it. I don't see anything on the Racer Walsh site, but I didn't really look around at great length.

You can easily fabricate a pointer from a piece of heavy gauge wire (like a coat hanger). Just a little bending, a loop in one end to bolt it to a convenient mount for the timing cover and a bit of tweaking to get it lined up with the 0º mark and you're there! That's how we used to make them for our mini-stocks.

It all depends if this is for the street with the alt. and power steering pumps too.

www.powerbyace.com has a couple in the works and you might want to check out their new TVL checker too!

FYI....you don't need a full degree power pulley as every pointer points to a different place on them.

What you need is to get your pointer, set TDC and then mark the pulley properly.

It seems most mount over on the pass. side but the dist. is easier to reach from the driver side......
