The transmission is overheating. Install an aftermarket cooler.

It's got an oem cooler, tow package etc. do you think an aftermarket cooler will make a difference? I will try it but wanted to make sure you knew it had an oem cooler.

also just so you got all the info. The trans was rebuilt by ammoco 20,000 miles ago, but 7 yrs ago. I just bought it. f250, 4:11 rearend, tow package, 460 motor. Have you heard of this problem b4?

Doesn't matter if it has an OE cooler. Its overheating. When you say it has and OEM cooler, do you mean an external cooler? All automatics have a cooler in the end of the engine's radiator.

It may be overheating because of inadequate cooling. The cooler could be stopped up or have inadequate airflow. Or, it could be overheating because the converter clutch is slipping. If the converter clutch is slipping, it will need a new converter and a Superior pump kit.

Thanks. I am going to try to put an aftermarket cooler on it and see what happens. Better safe than sorry. Don't know much but I do know that heat ain't good for the tranny.

It's not uncommon for an E4OD to puke fluid when it overheats. Most seal problems will occur at any time while running and/or driving, no matter what climate it's in.

You could do a trans fluid change/flush yourself; drain the pan, converter (if it has a plug, you'll need to spin it around verify) and drain/flush the trans cooler and check to make sure ther are no clogs in the cooler, lines or through the radiator bowl that the fluid goes through before the trans cooler. Draining the pan, converter and cooler will get almost all of the fluid out of it. Don't forget to check and clean the magnet at the bottom of the pan.

I really appreciate the help. Luckily I have a cousin with a trans flush machine. I think I am going to go see him tomorrow and flush it and add an aftermarket cooler. It can't hurt and sounds like it just might solve the problems. Again, thanks for the help and God Bless!!

Wow! I can't believe this thread is still going after more than 18 months. The problem was the front seal. The person I bought it from on E-Bay neglected to tell me the truck sat for 2 years before he decided to sell it. Of course, that caused the seal to dry out. Cost me about $900 to have the thing re-sealed.

I have put about 500 miles since buying mine, but no leaks yet. I am guessing , and hoping, that I have a overheating problem. I am going to put an aftermarket cooler on and wait and see if it leaks this summer.

I'd recommend a trans cooler from a Powerstroke. I installed one in my GEN 1 L, and a B&M trans pan, and those parts made a significant trans temp improvement. The PSD trans cooler is 2x's wider than my stock GEN 1 trans cooler. The PSD cooler has larger ports so you'll need some adapters.

You can use an a/c condensor.

There is lots of cooling area.
Clean it out and bolt it in.
Been there, done that many times.

Buy a truecool or hayden. They make the best coolers. Most OE Ford coolers are Truecool. You can buy either cooler at:

E4OD TRANS LEAK AT BELLHOUSING

Hello , I have a 1995 E350 box truck with an E4OD trans that is hemmoraging fluid out of the bellhousing. I replaced the trans 40,000 miles ago with an RMP trans , and it was fine up untill 30,000 miles (i am out of warranty by years - not mileage). I was on a 130 mile trip when it spit out all the fluid for no apparent reason. I filled the trans with fresh fluid and drove it home with no problem (did not leak a drop since). Now at 40,000 miles it did the same thing twice in one day during 15 mile trip (one way)- (truck sat for 6 hours before return trip). I have been told it was the front seal , but that makes no sense since when a seal leaks , it continues to leak. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem / I was a certified FORD tech for 7 years and have never run into this issue before. Truck has radiator internal cooler and factory external cooler.
