I have an 05 fx4 with 19000 miles. The general tires seem like the rubber is chipping and flaking. Never saw tires wear like this. Any word on this or happen to anyone else?
On my 06, I have 3600 miles and my passenger side front is doing that also, on the outside part of the tread. I brought it to dealer and dealer did a rebalnce on the tires, says, it will fix it (bull) I will watch it for another 1000 or so and bring it back again. Also, check your tire pressure, too much will cause the tire to cup.

I have a 2004 SCREW that I bought new in October of 2005 from a local dealership, I have not put many miles on mine at all, approximately 1500. I have noticed the same flaking and chipping already mainly on the front tires. They became noticeable at 800 miles and have only gotten worse. The ride quality is well below par for my expectations of a new truck. Since I do not drive it much and it sets in the garage they tend to flat spot really badly and ride rough until they sling back out. Several of the fellows at work have taken their new tires and had a nitrogen mixture put in them. They seem to think that this would help with my flat spotting issue.. Has anyone else put the nitrogen mixture in their tires and noticed any differences in ride quality or tire wear???
I have them on my truck too and don't care for them. As soon as I can convince the wife I'm going to get some new tires. Check out this link. It might help me convince the wife.
The air in your tires is mostly nitrogen anyway. 21% O2, 78% Nitrogen (+-) and 1% other (+-).
I think (and please correct me if I'm wrong) running just Nitrogen, 100%, stabilizes the pressure in the tires. Since nitrogen does not absorb water (humidity) the pressure variations are predicable. Cold tires vs. hot tires.
So, if that is all the nitrogen does, I can't see it helping the flat spotting problem. The flat spots are at the side of the tire on the ground, due to the weight of your truck.
A nitrogen fill would be expensive. You would have to have a supply at home, or have a supplier in town.
I'm kinda curious, what nitrogen mix are your friends running??

I posted a pic in my gallery of my front passenger side tire. It looks like the tread is "lifting" away from the tire. I had it to the dealer and they said they rebalanced the tires for me, and they told me the "cupping" look on the tire will go away by itself. Bull!! Anyone else's look like this?
I also have general on my 05 stx 4x4 these tires are absolute junk at 1200 miles one seperated called dealer they told me to call ford got the runaround told me the tire warranty was through general long story short I GOT THE SHAFT and won't forget that when its time to turn it back at the end of the lease
High speed balances, chipping tread, separating tread, why does Ford keep using these ***** tires? I've never heard anyone that just LOVES their General's. What is it with Ford and tires?
I bought a 04 4x4.It had general tires. AT 10000 miles dealer replaced the front tires ,aligned front, and road force balance. The truck still vibratedafter awhile, and the tires were going to pot. Finally at 28000 miles they aligned and repaced three tires and put spare on ground to make 4 new tires. Ford knows they have issues and extended tire warrantee to 36000 miles. At 30,000 miles I worked a deal with Discount Tire for $50 tradein one ea tire towards a new set of MICHLIN tires. Most if not all tire issues went away. The general tires are JUNK.IF you push your case Ford will replace them,BUT it"s more GENERALS.
I think part of problems was the truck. I traded for a KING RANCH W/20" rubber. only have 300 miles but so far smooth ride.

On my 04 SCAB, I had the generals replaced by a nice set of toyo's. The truck rides much better with the new tires, but I'm seeing a similar tire wear pattern as in 96f150's gallery. My wear pattern is not as aggressive but the tires are wearing out much quicker then I would like to see. The alignment was checked at the dealer and they say its within spec. I think some of the tire wear is due to the new front end design along with the much heavier frame weight. IMO the oem general tires are down right dangerous to use on such a heavy vehicle. You would think that ford would be smarter after the whole exploder tire disaster.
I put some Yoko Geolanders on my STX, and with a much more agressive tread, they still rode better. We have 6 STX's at work, and we're rotating them all out of the Generals...
