I have a 90 ford f 150 it was real cold outside and I tried to start my truck and ignition switch twisted all the way around and I changed the switch and ignition module but still the same problem if i turn the ignition backwards my power goes on but if i put it forward it doesnt does anyone have a clue im confuzzled
i had the same thing happen to me. If you pull your steering wheel off and remove the turn signal electronics you can see probably what i saw. There is a cast aluminum piece that connects to the ignition switch with a dowel and that piece is a 1/4 circle then has a square piece about4" long. That 4" long piece connects to the rod that goes to the end of your column and goes to the switch box. What happened on my truck, the place where that 1/4 circle is cast into the long square broke. What i did was remove it from the truck, drill and tap so you can put the two back together. This is the only way i could do it because they have to be put together inside the steering column. There isnt enough room to put it back together otherwise. I dont know if the dealer offers this part but id bet you need a whole steering column because this piece is put it before the tilt pivot is pressed together. Oh yeah the long square part also is attached to the key release button on the bottom of the column. Im sure if you pull everything apart you will see what im talking about, but its kinda hard to explain.
Yeah i noticed that and it is the same symptoms you said it sucks to hear i have to buy a new steering column but that is what i figured not much of a mechanic type thats why when i found this website it was perfect for me thanks for the fast answer much appreciated
Shift1313 is correct. However Ford do sell the part-about $6.00. You have to pull the two little plugs holding the two parts of the tilt together and ease them a little apart. Not difficult but time consuming. The part Shift1313 describes is called the steering column ign. switch acuator.
thats great that they offer it lazy K. I might have to go pick one up and just keep it on hand for when my tapped hole fails. It was funny when mine broke in the walmart parking lot. Only thing i had in the truck was jumper cables so im sure it looked funny jumping the starter relay with cables not hooked to another car
it is possible to change that part with out taking the tilt apart. Mibe is a straight shift and it broke. If memory serves i trimmed the piece that went to the button you must push to relaese key and wiggled it in.. Now you dont mash button to remove key. But it can be done with out taking apart the tilt...
I had the same problem on my 88 f-150. On my tilt steering I bought a new part from the dealer which looks like it is made of cast white metal.Semi circular piece with 5/16 square and 3-4 inches long bar attatched to it I replaced it a year ago and if memory serves me correct I had to take the tilt apart as it was impossible for me to install the partin one piece. It helps to have an extra pair of hands when putting it back together because you have to compress the tilt column spring and install a couple of pins at the same time. Part was around $12.00 here in Ontario.

i know i had to take mine apart because i pulled it out of the column in two pieces to fix it. I drilled/tapped it then jbwelded it for extra security and i couldnt get it back in that way. I had to put it back in apart.
