Hey guys I got another ?
I have a beefed up 351c w/ a c4 and dual exh. I want to add a set of headers to help the clev. but have been told by many parts people that since the 351c did not come in trucks that I couldn't get them.
Did the 351m come in the 70' f100's as an option ? If so wouldn't headers for it work? Also would there be a clearence problem with the power steering components or the c4?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Feb-02 AT 10:26 AM (EST)]First, no 351 was offered in thr 70 F series. The V8 choices were the FE 360 and 390, or the 302.
Second, I'm no Cleveland expert, but I didn't think it was related to the 351M, so I don't believe that 351M headers would work even if the 351M had been offered. The 351M and 400M were offered in later (77+?) F series trucks.
I think you're going to have to use trial and error. Will headers for a 302 fit the heads on your 351C? If so, there are headers available for 1970 F series trucks with the 302. The nice thing about your 70 F series is that there is a lot of room in the bay. You may be able to find something that will fit.
I am no Cleveland expert either, but I believe that the 351C did share some features with the 351M/400 series. While the 351C shared the bellhousing bolt pattern of the sb series (289,302,351W, etc.) it was actually designed on the 400 platform. I believe that some heads, intakes, exhaust manifiolds, and most accessory brackets etc. are mostly interchangable between the 351C and the 351M/400 series, but it has been a while since I had a 400 and my memory just isn't what it used to be. Your best shot might be to get what you want/can find and take it to a muffler shop and let them custom fit it. Good luck with it and never give up 'til you get it like you want it.
I found a little bit more information in one of the tech articles on this board. It is "out of context" so you might want to read the entire article. I believe that it was titled "High Performance Options for the 351C/400 Engines" or something similar to that. Here is the information:
"The first M-block, the 400, was introduced in the 1971 model year as a longer-stroke variant of the 351 Cleveland design. The 400 was the
ultimate development of the 335 series, and it was the last pushrod V8 engine that would ever be designed by Ford.
Both engine types in the 335 series share certain design characteristics, but the only major component interchangeable between 351C engines and
M-block engines is the cylinder head. Several internal components and accessories interchange, including camshafts, timing sets, water pumps, fuel
pumps, oil pans, distributors, and thermostat housings."
With this amount of interchangeability, especially including the heads, it looks like headers from a 400 should fit a 351C and vice-versa.
What your going to have to watch for is the 351M/400 engine has a taller deck height. Headers for these would stick down lower on the 351C with its lower deck height. Don’t know what else they would run into with this combo.
I had a 4V 351C in my 67'...I used headers for a 73' Mustang. I had to "notch" the crossmember with an abrasive cut off disc to clear the collectors. I had a C6 behind with a 4.11 Detroit Locker in the rear and it sure surprised a bunch of Camaros!
