Hey guys...my 67 has a NP 435 in it...and since I dont plan on pulling any houses off the foundations, or pulling tractors outta muddy fields...the "granny" gear sux!!! I want to know if anyone out there knows if I can have a tranny shop move up the gears...making 2nd-1st, 3rd-2nd, and 4th-3rd, then have a new 4th gear be cut to make an overdrive...something that makes the final drive ratio less that 1.0:1...let me know what you think!!!
I believe they put that same tranny in bigger trucks, but were 5 speeds. If you try to put yours in fifth, you should feel kind of a notch where fifth would be. Maybe you could just add fifth gear just a thought, but I like your idea too so let us know if it works I have about a thousand of those things. John
Yes, there is a 5 speed version (in the same case), I think called the 535, but it too has a 1:1 high gear. The extra gear becomes a "lower" second gear between the existing first and second.(I have looked in there and cannot see where that gear goes)
An alternative is the Mopar version of the 435, which I have heard described as a 445 or a 435D. This tranny does away with the double-low first in favour of a more usable ratio of about 4:1, and uses higher second and third ratios as well. I am not sure if the gears, or the whole tranny, can be swapped into a Ford. The Mopar unit uses a fine-spline input, but a matching clutch disc might solve that.
Give it a try and let us know how it turns out!

You might want to look at changing your rear end ratio first. I lowered my 4.10 down to a 3.56 in my F-250. It did help some, but I still start out in second.
The 435D I had was in a '70 Fargo (Dodge)200. I don't know how to id that trans. It's a direct drive 4th.
I am told that D61 gears as high as 3.08 will fit some D60 cases, but I'm no expert. I went from a 4.56 to a 3.73 and it was a huge improvement. The 3.54 is probably the best you will do if you scrounge the yards. Look for a mid 70s Camper Special with 460 & auto.

You may be better ahead to look at your engine first. When I first got my truck it had the 240 NP435 Dana 60 4.10 combo as well and it pulled 17 miles a gallon easy @ 3000RPM for 60mph. Give or have it given a good tuneup and leakdown test to see if the engine needs rebuilt.
