I was looking over my truck today -2000 F350 4x4 82000 miles- and saw diff fluid leaking from the driver side axle, the hard rubber seal on the end is not in place it just poped out. I bought the truck in November and and on a warmer day it would make a clunk sound when stoping from the front driver side I thought balljoints, but when it was cold no noise. I think that could be one in the same problem. Theres not much fluid coming out just enough to make it damp and noticable. The dealership I bought it from GAVE me a 2 year 30000 mile warranty, so im going to bring it in if it is going to be more then my deductible.
unless you have experiece with differentials you don't want to replace that seal yourself, the seal is clux stated is inside teh diff and you have to remove both axles, and the ring gear/carrier assembly to get to it. I would replace both at the same time if you do decide to do it yourself since it take just as much work to do one as it does to do both.
I just had mine done (twice). I had the same idea as you if it costs less than the deductable on my warranty I would do it myself. I don't think I could have gotten two seals, oil and a cover gasket for that so I had someone do it. The nice thing about the place I had mine done at is they had no problem with me sticking around. I hate people working on my truck as well.
