Brake problems on my 85'

I recently replaced the front calipers and pads on my 85' For some reason i cant get any pressure. I have tried bleeding them several times and still nothing. It seems like there is pressure when the engine is off but as soon as you fire it up and hit the brake pedal it hits the floor. Would i need to bleed the rear as well even though i havent done anything with them?

Im stuck here and am out of ideas, there are no leaks that i can find and the master cylinder doesnt seem to be leakin although it is quite rusty and crappy looking.

What do you guys think???

It might be a good idea to go ahead and bleed the whole system, just to be safe. I had a problem similar to that years ago on my 89, the front brakes went bad, the calipers needed replacing. So I replaced them and bled the whole system...and wouldn't you know it, the next day the rear drums went out, starting losing fluid through the brake cylinders. But each time, the pedal was soft...after replacing the cylinders it definately gave it a stiffer feel...don't know if that actually had anything to do with it or not, but in my case it worked.

But definately bled the whole system...eliminate the simple things first. Also you said you are seeing rust around the master cylinder, is it where it mounts to the booster? On my 83 it used to leak at the back of the master where it mounted to the booster, so she had the soft feel. When I replaced it the cylinder and the booster it seemed to correct that problem with the 83, the fluid ate up the rubber inside the booster, or so I was told that is what happened. But it could be the rubber is torn and not giving you the vacuum needed for the brakes.

Don't know if any of this helps...but good luck!
Mike

Brake problems

I have an '83 and am having the exact same problem. My calipers were sticking after it sat up for about a year with transmission problems. I replaced the front calipers and pads and that is when the problem began. I have blead the entire system 3 times. I also replaced the master cylinder and vacuum booster and blead some more and still have the problem. I would love some input from you or anyone else about the cure. And yes I blead the brakes with the rod extended out of the proprotioning valve.

Not to steel the thred, but I've had my brake light come on about four times in the last two weeks. I knowest it after I got to my destenation. I looked around the wheels and the master and no leeks. The flued was a little low so I filled it. but the light came on again last night. (The brakes work fine) Anybody got any ideas?

I'd like to know exactly how you are bleeding the brakes. You say you got nothing - but I don't know what that means. When you open the bleed screw, no fluid comes out?? or what??

If you didn't open the rears, you shouldn't need to bleed them. But if all the fluid ran out while you had the fronts open, for example, then the whole system needs to be bled out in the correct order.

Yes I am at a lost to. How can you bleed the system if you can't pump it up? The question is do you have fluid comming out of the bleeder when you open it?

Brake problems on my 85'

Stuckinmud, I am a little ahead of you in the money spending dept. When I was where you are now I chose to replace the vacuum booster next, but when I removed the master cylinder there was so much rust I decided to replace it as well. It did improve things some but not enough. With the engine running, I still have a soft pedal that I can push to the floor. With the engine off it is rock hard a 1/2 in down. Think my next step is the rear cylinders and shoes. One thing you should check is the amount of vacuum your are getting to the booster. Make sure you don't have a split in the vacuum hoses.
Good luck and if you come across a cure please post it.......Ray
