I happened upon a site the other day for 'teardrop' trailers- those funky little rounded campers from the 50's (and older). Now I have to have one! Anybody else ever had/built/seen one? I downloaded some free drawings, and I'm going to modify it to open up like a clam shell, then have canvas made so that you can have some standing headroom when set up to camp. I might also incorporate a ramp to load my antique Cub Cadet, so I can bring it to tractor shows.
I looked at a couple brands online, sort of interested in one myself.
http://www.golittleguy.com/ These folks will build you a cargo version. Their prices seem a bit high for a trailer but then they're sold through dealers so might be like MSRP on cars....ya don't actually pay that.
http://www.tab-rv.com/index.php These are larger campers, also sold through dealers and found only a few prices advertised online. Look pretty nice though.
I was shocked by the prices of these little guys- in some cases over $7000! That's why I'll build my own. There are several suppliers that carry trim, extrusions, various hardware, and even re-pop fiberglas fenders. I'm going to build mine of plywood over glued framework, then weatherproof it w/ epoxy and fiberglas cloth. I'm going to finish the lower half as a 'woodie' and paint the upper half. Mine plan is to have the whole upper half hinged at the front. I'll raise it up maybe 3' when stopped for camping, and everything will be inside, instead of the traditional external kitchen. With the top raised, I will have the option of lowering the hinged back to form a ramp for loading my tractor to take it to shows. Drive to the show, remove the tractor, install the canvas filler, and set up camp. Since I can't afford a '40 Ford Woodie, this will have to do!
