The truck a 300 4.9l straight six
I am putting on a offenhauser dual plane intake and holley 4160 390 cfm 4-bbl carb. Has anyone else done this on the same truck? If so did the stock distributer work with it. If not what did you have to do to get it to run right?
Hello- Welcome to FTE! I have moved your post to the specialized forum we have here for your question. Check out the list of tech forums we have on FTE. There is a wealth of information and expertise here to help you. There are a number of links in my sig below to help you also. Have fun!
Yes, many have done that upgrade here. Are you using efi exhaust or headers with it also? My understanding is that a stock carb exhaust will not work with it? I am going to do that as soon as I can get some efi exhaust manifolds and exhaust pipe. Yes, stock ignition system will work but you could upgrade if you wish. Try doing a search. I have read about the upgrade here before. If someone else can't show you a link try a post in the electrical forum. What year is your truck?
Yo Nick. Does your 84 I6 have a computer running the dist? If so I don't think your stock TFI dist will work with your mods without remapping the computer, if that is even possible. My feed back carb had at least two sensors on it. One for throttle position and one for the feedback solenoid. You will NOT have those features on the new carb. Your motor will run, but the timeing will not advance, and the computer will go into a "limp it home mode". I have a Chilton's Ford Full Size Van Manual and on, get this, page 6-66, it's shows the engine wiring for the 1984-86 4.9L engine. Look at all those sensors and tell me your new mods will not effect the workings of your dist. One fix is to gut the old computer with all the wiring/sensors and get a dist with vacuum advance, old school stuff.
That computer just need the TPS sensor adapted to new carb. Feedback solenoid is not requiered for proper operation while engine keep good fuel tunning.
O2 sensor has to be installed also. Timing will perform same but I'm not sure if that computer let the engine run over 3500RPM
I unplugged all sensors. Im not sure where the computer would be on my pick-up the distributer does have the 9-pin module thing though. I removed pretty much all emissions stuff including smog pump and all the hoses that went to that. I went and ran it yesterday, it was very weird, the holley has an electric choke and it would not shut off and it idled pretty high. But if i manually shut off the choke it idled down to a normal rpm but whenever i was driving it it would just wanna die when i gave it gas (timing not advancing is my guess). but if i left the choke on it would run pretty good but it would still missfire. Now could i pull a distributer of a older model ford say 70's-80's and just put that in and adjust my timing?
a complete duraspark II set-up works. junkyard finds would include dist, ignition box on the fenderwell, wiring from dist. to module. The wires from the duraspark dist are spliced into the tfi coil(green w/yellow, and red), or get the duraspark coil and clamp. At this point, your ecm is moot. Mileage may suffer a tad, but reliability will improve IMO.
Nick. Did you see the old post I sent about the Oregon Ignition Supply? For around 135 plus shipping you will get a rebuilt dist, new cap, new GM HEI module new coil, new mounting bracket, new wiring harness, no bee stings from the bone yard, no guess work on does this bone yard part work, no rusty parts. 503.931.5978. I guess you know that electric choke needs a hot wire on when the motor is running. Stick with it Nick and watch out for the curve ***** and hi-jacks. .

Computer is located betwen instrument cluster and ash tray, put your head close to gas pedal looking up then you will see it. Use Duraspark II ignition module and distributor then do final setup to carbureter fuel circuits.
Nick. The Duraspark II is a Ford item used before the frickin' computer came along. It is a electronic ignition. You can find them in the bone yard for cheap, next to the bee hive. There are many, many post on this site on the Duraspark II. Do some home work. Another site with diagram can be found at mustangsteve.com/conversion.
