Basically, a removable winch on foresty forwarders and tractors where you can vary the amount of pressure being applied by the winch using a cable attachment. If the amount of force you are using is greater then what it is set for with the cable, then the clutch will slip. The main benefit is when skidding logs and one snags on a stump, so you do not snap the cable.
they work great for those who work in rough areas or for those who think they may get stuck where AAA wont recover them. just beware that those setups wont handle much of a side load. i have seen pics where the receiver hitch and winch mount both bent all to hell.
they are worth it in my opinion esp if you use it 8-10 times they pay for themselves ( i was figuring $100 each time you get stuck and the average winch costs about $800)
for occasional use, there great. you dont have that expesive winch sittin on your bumper, its safe locked in the toolbox. just dont try pulling yourself sideways.
how about this for the side pull issue.....having the normal receiver hitches front and back, then having four more built into the ends of some custom bumpers pointing out sideways, maybe in the ends of some pipe bumpers or something...you would have to make sure your bumper mount is rock solid though, and try not to work the winch as hard as you would when winching straight....just a random thought....
