i was wondering if the starter in a 97 7.3 l would be the same as a starter from a 89 7.3l diesel and also if the 6.9l uses the same starter as the 89 7.3l
I just replaced my starter in the 95 F-350 1 Ton with an Autozone unit it was 168 dollars with a lifetime warrentee, anyway if my memory is correct the starter on my old 87 F-250 with 6.9 had a totally differant style bendix gear which was more like what is found in most U.S. built engines, agin if I am remembering correctly that was 7 years ago.......
Some of the big E-series box vans and trucks used the old two bolt flange up into the mid 90's, but the vast majority of the 94-03 use the three bolt style. Any starter from a 94-03 pick-up wil bolt in.
I have only had 2 starters go bad in my years of owning Ford Diesels, 1988 till now, and about 600k miles on 2 trucks...also have rebuilt another 3 from buddies and neighbors PSD's.
Notice I said rebuilt. A local starter repair shop does the job for $60-80. He claims that these are really tough and usually only need a new brush plate and buffs the bendix gear shaft. I've stood ther and watched him do it. Takes about 15-20 minutes.
He said he would do a good cleaning and a new paint job...."that will cost you another $100+."
