Does anyone wash their engine?

My 96 PSD needs a bath. I've had a couple guys tell me they power wash their engine regularly without covering anything; I've had some tell me they power wash after covering certian parts; and I 've had some say you should never power wash an engine.

Do any of you guys power wash? And if so, what is your procedure?

Thanks

If it's grease and oil, use a couple of cans of engine cleaner/degreaser. Then use a low pressure hose to rinse everything off. If it's just dirt, use compressed air. I'd avoid high pressure water.

I never power wash. Use a strong degreaser and brush stubborn spots then gentle spray rinse only. First cover any exposed electric connections and your intake if you have a custom open element filter.

I use smipple green. Just spray it on a hot engine, let set, then take the hose from the outside of home. start engine frist, and spray down, the hard to get to spots use a brush to get into crevaes. if carbed, take caution not to get water into it.

I use Simple green on a cold engine (everyone has different opinion on this) then use the pressure washer with the 40* fan so the pressure is not that intense, and hold the tip back some. That is after I cover alt. power block and pulled the intake, putting a 4" cap on the remaining pipe. Works Great!

I used to use either simple green or brulin (turbine compressor wash) I did this for many years until I rebuilt my engine and most of the bolts were rusted in. so now I refuse to wash an engine compartment. And from this I have had far fewer electrical problems also.
P.s. ditto with the helicopters you get them wet too often and you will have phone calls in the middle of the night.

Thanks guys....I think I'll try the low impact ideas first just to be sure I don't get something wet that shouldn't be wet.

i pressure wash my engine and engine compartment on a regualr basis. i can't stand everything in there getting all dusty and polleny! i just take the intake off (got the 6637 napa filter) and soak everything in simple green or purple power and then hit everything (aside from electrical parts) with my buddies 4000psi p-washer with 145* water

I use Simple Green then rinse it down with the hose. A LITE RINSE. Then I use my air compressor to get the water out of any places that would cause problems. ALT. Solenoids, Sensors, ect. I do that every two weeks.

That's how I do it to. Simple green on a cold engine, low pressure rinse, and blow it off with shop air.
