Hi All,
I'm new to the group and a new Ford truck owner. I just bought an 02 Explorer XLT with the 4.0 last Friday and so far I love it. However, there is an issue that's making me really nervous. I didn't purchase a warranty and have noticed over the weekend that the transmission seems to slip a little occasionally between shifts and sometimes it shifts a little hard. I found info in the owners manual and on the net about the adaptive transmission thing and figured that since the car was on a used car lot, it may have had several drivers "test driving". Would that cause these symptoms and how long will it take for the transmission to "adapt" to my driving? I also don't have any service records for the vehicle so I don't know if the transmission has been serviced, but the car looks new inside and out and seems to have been well taken care of. Is this a normal thing or do I need to rush back to the dealer asap and try to get it taken care of? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Yeah I just purchased an 02 xlt aswell and I am experiencing difficulties also. It has 109000kms so I am goin to get it serviced at the ford dealer this week. I would suggest you do the same as I am not wanting to damage anything else. My problem is a hesitant acceleration and jerks sometimes when I release the gas. Also I get a rattle or ping sound when I gas kinda hard around 50 or 60 km/hr. If I run premium gas in it with High octane I notice smoother and more power but it gets exspensive as the Explorer guzzles gas. Ive also used a fuel injector or carb cleaner in the gas and noticed little changes.(smoother acceleration). Ive been looking all around on this problem and it can be anything from spark plugs, plug wires, maf, IAC, lifters, etc. If I were you I would go get it checked by the dealer.
Keep me updated on your situation I hope it runs smoother.
I own a 02' "Exploder" also, I mean Explorer. I bought it new and was shocked when I found there was no dip stick to check the Tranny fluid.I have 96,000 miles on it.Ford recommends a tranny flush (About $150.00)at every 30,000 miles.I did this and then waited and had it done at 95,000 a few weeks ago.Your pretty much at a professionals mercy to have it flushed and fluid checked for any signs of burning.Ther is no filter to be replaced.
Wheel bearing assy's($180.00 for bearing/hub assy alone) are a common problem with these also, so keep an ear out for noises in front and rear. You may feel a rumble when pulling out or backing up.This is a sign of a bad bearing.I had RF replaced at 58,000 and I just replaced the LF about a month ago.Hope the rears hold off, but I feel another rumble starting though which may be RF again or back bearings.Rear-end whine is common on these also at around 50mph.Also, rear axle seals are a common problem also. I had mine fixed about 3 times until Ford put new axles in and so far so good.Good luck!!
Actually there is. I decided to drop my pan in mine, to replace the filter, and there is one there. However, when I opened the new one from the parts store, it was different. So I had to reinstall the old one to get back and forth to work. But yes, there is a filter.
Strange- the dealer told me there was not a filter.I just had my tranny flushed and they did not pull the pan or suggest doing so to change any filter. But thanks for the feedback
yeah I found it odd too. It's a pretty normal tranny filter, nothing special. I even took it to the auto parts store to try and match it up with no luck. Possibly another "dealership only" part.
