I am currently looking at buying a 1978 F150 4x4 for around 3000. The body is farely solid other than the rust above the wheel wells on the bed. I comes with a 429 thunderjet. I have been looking for specs on this engine. I know that it has the same block as the 460 but other than that all that i have found out is that it has a 2 bolt main. If anyone has anything to say about it post there ideas. looking for more info. thanks jonathan
nothing wrong with a 429 thunderjet other than it's pretty high compression for todays gas, and it might not like the cheap stuff. Nothing wrong with the 2 bolt blocks, the only 385 series blocks that were factory 4 bolt was the SCJ, some CJ, and the Boss 9. I am currently running a factory 2 bolt block for a stroker at close to 900hp without problems, so don't worry about it bieng weak because they aren't. Find out what year it actually is, as long as it's not a 72 it should be a good engine for you. They do respond very well to some exhaust port porting, a dual pattern cam helps too, and headers never hurt.
Well about the truck. I was just looking at what others would say about the truck. Possibly advice. Any information on what people think. That is why the post is here.
Nothing wrong with the base engine in 72, it's the heads, the D2VE heads used that year only are approx 100cc open chamber heads and very prone to detonation, and are basically considered teh worst heads for the 385 series engines.
i bought the truck. will get some pics on the site. also does anyone have any info on getting a fan shroud for the truck? is the one that is available from lmc for the 460 going to fit?
