I am in the process of completing a new 390. I have new custom valve covers and and a new air cleaner. My dad brought up the fact that the old engine had the hose running from one of the covers to the cleaner for crank case pressure. I can't run that hose now due to the new parts. Is this something I need to consider or will it be fine without it? The engine has a rv cam and Edelbrock Performer intake and carb.
I know this is probably a stupid question but this is my first rebuild and I want to be sure I do it right.
You can just run a regular breather on the valve cover away from the PCV valve (you have to run an inlet for the PVC systemand you need to run a PVC system). I actually cut a hole in the bottom of my chrome air cleaner and mounted the hose there on my 1968 F250's 390 I built. Worked fine, but the breather works too.

I need to get new breather caps for the valve covers. Are you saying that if I get get just the normal breather caps then I'll be ok? What do you mean about the PVC system?
If your PVC system is hooked up, the hose from the other valve cover goes to the air clearer, most of the after market air cleaners had a way to hook a hose to them, if not you can make a nipple and attach one, if you can not attach one you can put a breather cap on the valve cover, but you will get some oil from this on you engine, the oil that would normally burn in the engine. You can run a hose from the cap to the back of the engine and down and out, but will not pass a smog test.

Yes, all the breather caps have some sort of filter in them. I prefer the finer filters in the hose system, but the other will work fine.
