Ok.....had a rebuilt 352 installed in motor. Got it running enough to come home but needed a distributor which I have gotten. Lined up the distributor to number one plug, had the carburator rebuilt and now I can't get it to start. New battery....vacuums is ok but can't get it to turn over much past the initial sputter. Fuel line is my next thinking because I do pour gas into carburator, without doing that it sounds worse yet. Any ideas......? Thanks jim

That would mean that the vacuum would be facing the motor....??? We installed distributor and lined up number one..... unless the rebuilt is wrong I can't believe it is 180.... ?? jim
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Feb-02 AT 08:47 PM (EST)]The tip of the rotor is supposed to face #1 with the engine at TDC on the power stroke >not the top of the intake stroke.
You could turn that distributor Vacuum advance to face anything.
It's the Inards(rotor) that should be your main concern.

Au contraie mon amie
It depends, as mil1ion said, which stroke the #1 piston is on. The distributor can be put in when #1 is at TDC but it isnt on the firing/compression stroke, this is 180 out. As also stated the "inards" of the distributor rotate without the vaccuum advance moving.
If in doubt pull the #1 plug and disconnect the coil so the engine wont fire. Then turn the engine over while you have your finger over the #1 plug hole. When you feel lots of compression that is the compression stroke. This is when the distributor rotor should be pointing at the #1 tower on the distributor cap. You also should see the timing mark on the balancer at or close to the 6-8 degree timing mark, or whatever degree you are supposed to set the base timing at.
To me it still sounds like the distributor is 180 out on the engine.
Thanks....it is worth a try.... I need to wait till the wind to die down though or the hood will blow right off (Working outside). I did take the #1 plug out, did the finger thing and all..... but, since it obviously is not turning over..I'll try again... Thanks jim
