fuel issue??

I've been over and over my engine and can't seem to figure out what's wrong. I have an 82 f250 with a 400CI engine. I've been working on it for a while now and have many of the small bugs worked out...one i havn't been able to solve though. If i take the truck down the road, floor it, get up to speed, and let off the gas it constantly backfires. It does this at idle as well if you floor it and let it snap back to idle it backfires...sometime one loud bang, but mostly several small popps. The plugs are good...all cylinders are firing (Finally!!). timing has been tripple checked. stock carb, with base settings. I've tried playing around with the idle mix screws, but other than that everything is at the stock settings. it starts great, runs strong..etc. I'm thinking that it may be part of the emissions system causign the problem. There is an AIR valve, and a check valve. I suspect one or both may be the problem. I'd like to leave the emsissions controls in place, but im not sure how to diagnose them. I also do have an exhaust leak at one of the headers, but i'm not sure if this would cause a backfire. i wouldn't think so...anyway, any ideas would be great! Thanks

Bad check valve, control valves(depending on system), or an exhaust leak. A bad wire in the distributor pickup module can also cause this problem.
