I'm looking at an 06 PS F350 XLT, reg cab, 4x4 with the 6 speed. I know this will be an biased forum, but for doing about 50% driving with no trailer, and 50% driving with around 6K-10K on the trailer (gooseneck of course), which is better, Cummins or PS? I know Navistar is a good name, but Cummins is too. Oh, and I definately want a 6 speed, too many probs with autos. The price is good too, big sale where I live, this truck is priced at around 28K. I want a diesel, and want to get one I can drive for 200K, trade it in and get another with minimal problems. (but who doesn't )
Also, is the rear axle an 11.5", and is the front still a D60 or comparable?
Is this truck a SRW or DRW? A SRW will have the Ford 10.5" rear axle and a dana 60 front. I have a regular cab '05 F250 XLT 4x4, 6.0 PSD, 6 speed. I looked at some dodges before I bought mine. I'd like to drive one again just to see how my truck compares as far as the way it drives. You are correct, Navistar ans Cummins both build good engines. I cant tell you which is better, because I dont know. I feel that i'd be happy with either engine, but I like the way my Ford truck is built better than the Dodge.
Before you go - check out the tow capacities of auto VS manual. The weak point is the clutch in the manual. Engine is up to you. If you get a dodge check out the power curve on the 6 cyl vs the v8 I did and the 6 was weak on the low end. My cousin is one of the head engineers for dodge and he admits the engine is weak in the power curve.

Head engineer for Dodge and he says that the Dodge 6 cyl. diesel is weak on the bottom end? You sure he isn't the head of some other dept. with Dodge? That is probably the greatest light duty diesel engine made for low end power. The power curve is unbelievable down low even compared to the PS.
