Just brought this up, because did not want to start a new tread.
I am about to change rear diff fluid on my truck with LSD.
Few questions.
1 RTV sealant -- Is there a requirements for it such as for oil? Which one best to use?
2 I have read several diff opinions on adding friction modifier to already premixed gear oils. I don't want to screw it up since once in a while I drive throug some sand patches.
Have anyone figured out correct ratios for certain brand that they would recommend.
Servicing the rear diff is much easier if you remove the VSS and pour the lube in from the top. The fill plug on the side is at a funny angle for a bottle, unless you use a pump.
i change my rear diff oil about once a year and a LOT more often in my bronco... both have the same rear axle. i took a 4 foot piece of garden hose and stripped the top layer off of one end. then i duct taped the heck out of the other end to a large funnel. the stripped end is just perfect enough to fit in the fill hole snugly so as not to spill any and it allows me to stand up and pour MUCH easier. dont think i have spilled a drop yet!
one problem with pouring it in the VSS hole is, if you dont measure (IE buy the 1 gal jugs like i do) its easy to over fill and when that oil over heats it can and will blow a seal. i've done it my fair share of times! the fill plug is positioned there for a reason!

-cutts-
Cutts, You can't over fill the diff through the VSS hole if you leave the fill plug out. When it strats to drip, you're done.

gotcha... makes sense. i thought you were saying you filled with the fill plug in. just wanted to help make it clear for those who havent done it before!
posi track any one not add this? what would happen if i did not add this. would it do any damage besides to the tires? muahahah i like, i think.
thanks guys!!!! your a big help!!! saved me so much time and i appreciate it!

The friction modifier keeps the clutch packs between the steel discs lubed. It will keep the clutch packs around a little longer. They are not much more than clutch wafers. S running without the modifier will make any grabbing short lived.
well i think it needs the additive. i have seen one of my best friends replace his rear end do to not adding the stuff. i would add it. if you want pos trac put a hole new rear end in the truck. i would say 80% of the time if you dont add it your going to have problems. even if the gear oil is synthitic. i put it in mine and it still works great
