Superchips Microtuner vs Flashpaq

Guys...don't post very often. I have a 2005 F250 6.0L Diesel CC LWB 4x4. Love this truck. Has 6K miles on it. Run BFG 285 A/T on stock wheels and a topper. Did a recent trip on the Kenai Penninsula (Alaska) up and down hills and got 15.5 mpg with it.

I have been wanting to purchase a Superchips Microtuner for better fuel economy. I only tow ATVs and full bed of camping gear ocassionally...no major towing here...Saw a recent post re: the newer Flashpaq...can someone explain the difference to me. Which one should I buy? Thanks in advance.

The flashpaq is newer. The last time I called superchips, I got the impression that it had web updates that could be downloaded to a PC and then to the tuner. It was also my understanding that all 05 and up vehicles would be flashpaq only, no micro tuners. I think the last time I called them was Oct, nov so it may have changed.

Jdogg,I had a Microtuner on my 04 F-350 6.0 and when I tuned it for perf. it would smoke the rear tires and shift early and hard. I have a flash paq I bought for my 06 F-350 6.0 and it has no low end at all. It performes wonderful at the mid to upper rpm range on the highway, but has no low end at all. I have tried to tune it from the given performance settings to the settinge where it lets me pick my tire size and trans settings. It just has no low end torque at all. I run on the highway a lot so it isn't an improvision, but I can't play with the other trucks llike I used to.

That has nothing to do with the flashpaq.

05-06 trucks notoriously have less low end, and were less tuneable due to a change in piston design.
If you had an early 04, the difference was even more staggering compared to 05-06.
The flashpaq contains the same base programs as the latest revision 1704-1706 microtuners......but they are internet updateable and have new features (gear and tire speedo/shift correction).

In short, the file your truck gets depends on the stock file (and equipment) your truck has. The flashpaq makes the same power as the 1704, and vice versa, unless you have a different revision....under which case any actual change in power would be nominal (most revisions were drivability and shift tweaks).

Vic-Ferrari,

So which would you recommend for better fuel economy? I occassionally tow two ATVs and camping gear. No HEAVY towing.

It's the same.
Same program, different options......I would go with the flashpaq for internet updates, etc...

Some trucks get different mileage because of different stock programs and equipment, not becuase you swapped from a 1706 to a flashpaq (unless it was from a REALLY old revision 1704-1706)

Vic, do you know/recall if SC does trade in upgrades from the 1704 to the Flashpaq?

I need to update my program due to the latest emissions recall flash that I received and noticed that the Flashpaq can be used to recalibrate the speedo.

Thanks,

Daryl

Jdogg,

I have to disagree with Vic, if you're not into max performance the 1704 can be had for a lot less money than a Flashpaq. The only reason to get the Flashpaq is for internet flash programming if new programs becoem available at a later date. We are having a sale on 1704/1706's as they are going to be discontinued eventually and you can get one at a real bargain while they last!

We don't disagree at all.

The flashpaq has internet updates and will recalculate for gear tire swaps.
These are features that matter to some, not to others.

If you don't need internet updates or gear/tire changes, by all means, save the money grab a 1704-1706 from Mark!!!

The latest version files in the flashpaq and 1706 are the same.
The only differences are the internet updates and gear/tire options.

With a flashpaq, you can go to www.flashpaq.com for updates.
With a 1704-1706, mail it to SC for updates.

Other than that, trust me, the files are the same if the tuners are updated at the most recent files.

To further clarify what I meant here:

Do not change from a 1706 to a flashpaq for tuning reasons, do it only because you "must have" the internet updates or gear tire swaps.

If those are not essential to you, the 1704-1706 will work perfectly.

If I was buying new, I would personally go with the flashpaq to make updates easier.

If I currently had a 1704-1706, I would not go trading it for a flashpaq unless I was gettin' crazy with some wheels, tires and gears =o)

You will not gain power by trading a 1704-1706 for a flashpaq, and you will not lose power by choosing a 1704-1706.

No (at least not on 6.0L diesels it doesn't).

Only the Flashpaq will adjust for gear/tires.

I bought a Flashpaq 1805 for my '06 but am leery of installing it due to the coolant loss problems caused by some of the other tuners. My intention was to use it for towing but I going to wait until I hear some reports from the field.
