I've got a 2001 F350, 100k miles, and its trying to kill me! Went months with "allergy" type symptoms, didn't realize that everytime I turned on the A/C that it was blowing Mold in my face. Called the dealer and said that there is a water trap at the bottom of the Plenum that tends to collect mold, then sprays the bacteria out when the blower motor is turned on. Oh, my swollen eye *****!!!
My question is, anyone have any advice as to how I can rid myself of this problem? A/C plenum purge procedures? Anything I can spray down the vents and kill the bacteria? Really sucks. The dealer wants like 175.00 bucks.
The first thing to do is make sure the evaporator drain is open and clear. Then CAREFULLY spray a diluted mixture of water and bleach into the air inlet. Just mist it in for a few minutes, You don't want it spraying out of the vents. This will kill most forms of mold, bacteria, and most allergens. Let the system run with the doors open until the smell dissipates. If you want to get aggressive with the spraying, cover the outlets securely with cotton cloth (old Tee Shirt material) to catch any mist that may spray onto the seats, dashboard, etc.
There is a product on the market for this. It is a spry foam, you take the can and put the straw (like WD40) up the drain for the condenser/evaporator and blast away. It comes out liquid and turns into a solid, works like seom drain openers. As it foams up it kills all of that stuff, then comes back out the drain on the next cycle. Only thing is, I can't think of the name or maker.
I'm getting a foul odor the first few minutes of running my A/C. My truck is a 2002 f-150 SCrew 5.4l. I'm not sure where to look to check the evaporator drain. Anyone provide details or better yet pics?? The odor smells like an old swamp cooler.
