I have a 2001 F-350 diesel. The a/c clutch will not turn on after it cycles off unless I floor it and make the turbo kick in and the transmission upshift. I can also tap it with a hammer and it will kick on. Do I need a new clutch?
This is likely due to clutch wear. As the clutch wears the air gap (space between clutch disc and pulley) increases, when this happens the electromagnet cannot always pull in the disc. If you have feeler gages, check the air gap with a .016 gage, if it is very loose then pull the clutch disc off and inspect both the clutch disc and pulley faces. If they are in reasonably good condition you can get a shim pack and install a smaller shim to correct for your larger then normal air gap. Also check the 3 rubber pieces on the clutch disc for separation, if you see it, replace both the clutch and pulley.
I wish it was that easy. I just had the evaporator replaced last winter. It worked great until the weather got warm, so I brought it back to have them check the pressure and it was fine. It blows very cold when it works.
The air gap is a common problem with Ford A/C compressors. Lots of Tauruses (Taurii) had this problem because they came from the factory on the high side of nominal and just a little wear and it wouldn't grab anymore.
Cheap fix, not easy to get to (except on a Superduty ).
