I use to have a Scout with a solid axle 44 and I busted the U-joints on that also. (they are the same size) The inner U-joint or axle never busts. I dont really see much differnce in strength. Dont get me wrong, I would like a solid axle. I like them because I think they steer (track) better. But thats a job I dont have time for right now.
That's why I originally suggested a D60. It would be worth the time to do that upgrade, but you said you didn't want to do much fabing, and wanted to keep the 5 lug patern, so that'd be the best bet then, and then upgrade the u joints on it and you should be good to go.
BUT, I agree for a basic D44 swap, it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

I'm still haveing problems with computers. I cant seem to put stuff in the mods section. I will figure it out. The Flaires are Bushwhackers (cutouts) and the visor is a lund (I think).
