hey guys, need a little help here. i was tooling down the highway in my 78 bronco, 9" rear, NV435 4 speed, 400M when i hear and feel this shaking. since im on a 6 lane freeway i cant stop so i limp down the shoulder, and get off at the next exit. about 100 foot off the freeway i hear a THUNK! and feel this sickening rattle going through the shifter. well, i get out and the driveshaft is hanging loose and one end on the pavement. broken u joint. DOH!!!!
well anyways, which brand or make of a aftermarket special U-joint have yall found to be the most durable and worth the money. i dont want to go replace it with the standard CrapZone special because im sure its gonna break again, and probally a lot farther from civilization, like maybe on the RITS run in Uwharrie. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
i was looking for some input from the 4x4 crowd, so thats why i placed it here. i was looking for a higher performance, more durable U-joint that wont break on me like the last one. but thanks anyway andym.

ok i just went out and looked at it and the actual x-shaped u-joint is not broken, but the little caps with the bearings and junk on the tips are gone where it joins up to the yoke. does that count as a actual broken u-joint, or is that something else?
thanks pro, ill look into what spicer has. isnt dana-spicer the same deal?
awww i wanted it to be broken. i thought it was broken last nite, but when i looked at it a few minutes ago i saw that the caps were loose and the yoke has one cap in it, and the other one decided to go on a trip somewhere.
If you lost your c-clips then the caps probably flew out...
edit: if the core of the joint is still in good shape, then all you need is new caps and needle bearings. but I dont know if you can buy just those, never tried.

one of the clips, if im talking about the same thing your talking about, the thing that should be in the yoke with the snap ring, is there with a cap, i think, and the other hole is clean, with some bad deforming on it. ill probally replace the actual U-joint and check out the diff while the driveshaft is loose.
One of the holes in the yoke seems to be reamed out to me, at least in the dark it does. i havnt had a good chance to get out and look at it good. i figured it is reamed out ill just go junk-yard hopping.
also, how hard would it be to pull the axle shafts to remove the third member on the 9"?
Not to hard. Just pop off the drum and there should be 4 bolts on the back mounting plate of the brakes. You will have to go through a hole in the flange to get to them. Take those bolts off and the axle should come out.
Yep, spicers hold up quite well! Fairly cheap too. I think Nappy is the only auto ports store that still sells them. Most industrial driveline shops will also stock them. Here is where I get them when I cant find them local:
