Why is it that some diesels do not need a cat while others, like my 97 f250, do? Who can get you in trouble if you remove the cat in a truck that requires one? Is that likely to happen?
I was told by a local muffler shop guy that he (and all muffler shop guys) cannot remove a catalytic converter by law. But you are an adult, and can make your own decisions about such things I suspect. If one were to remove it, one might want to do so in a manner that it could be reused if needed.
Im not sure about NJ law but I have read the Federal EPA regs and the Texas Clean Air Act about cats - diesels are explicitly exempted from any requirement to have a cat converter in general. However, both sets of laws say that IF it came from the factory with one (and noone has ever explained why Ford does some years and not others) then it is against the law to tamper with or remove it. Texas has a $25,000 fine for each offense.
Who would turn you in? Could happen several ways - your annual inspection station could notice and just decide to turn you in; a mechanic that worked on your truck and noticed; and one that should be in the back of everyone's mind - if you mention here that you have removed it you are telling the entire world and any statement you make here would be admissible against you in court as an admission. Im sure there are EPA employees who like diesel trucks too and likely take a look at the various websites devoted to them. My suggestion, which you can take or leave, if you remove it, dont ever mention it in any post, anywhere.
I live in MA and was told by my inspection guy that he has never seen a PSD that emmits more than 10% of the legal limit, with or without a cat.
Food for thought.

Fewf..... I live in MA, but mine came with out a cat....*cough cough* *puts Saw-Zall down*
BTW.... where were u having an inspection done? Last time i had it done it was just a safty test.... they haven't mandated a emissions test on light duty diesels yet... that i know of...
MA has had emmission inspection for diesels since I bought my truck (2000).
Just like those fuel pigish gas engines it is done every other year.
Not every inspection station does diesels, in some cases you have to make an appointment to have it done. If you have had your truck more than 2 years, and havent had an emmission your inspection station has done it illegally (can be done by unpluging the phone line from the inspection computer, so it does not check with the regestry data base, I wont elaborate on how I know that).
however sooner or later you will get an emmission, not to worry though, its a guarenteed pass.
At least we dont all drive Mack's most of them fail the first 3 times, then they get a exemption certificate (only after you have spent $1000.00 in repair bills).
I STILL GOT A CAT, BUT WITHOUT THE HONEYCOMB INSIDE TO CLOG UP THE BACKPRESSURE.

Same here, so if you jack it up or look under the truck, you see the CAT......or do you?
well they would have to be pretty serious then. becuase it took a "BFH" to get my cat to come out of the pipe when i took it off. if they wanna do all that more power to em.
I have a WV inspectors license. A state trooper watch me do one once. he walked over and asked me to check the cat.
I sorta ticked him off when I grabbed a certain appendage and said "Nope, don't have one!" He walked over to the car with a hammer and hit it. It did not thump, but gave a hollow ring. I then realized that it was a SP setup car. They set me up good. All I did was check the exhaust for leaks.
