Hey,
I'm going to tune up my 460 to try to squeeze a few more MPGs outta it. What should I do to it (timing, parts, etc.)? How hard is it? Should I remove the engine and if i do, i might as well paint it. What did you guys do to your 460s?
Any tips will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Easy, no need to remove engine, 460 is an old design so is easy to work on. spark plug rachet would be nice, a few different extensions and flex socket would make for easy job. clean any rocks or debris from around base of plug to keep same from getting into cylinders. also may be necessary to work plug back and forth, the plug threads do seize up in hole. mabye bump the timing up a couple of degrees as long as it does not ping. I'm going to install a cold air intake cause the stock air filter housing is stuck on because the plastic bolts are rounded...But how do you advance timing?
At the vibration damper and the pointer on the front of the crankshaft on the lower part of the front of the motor. I recommend you get some knowlwdgeable help to teach you or a shop manual (and read it) before you do something that ruins your engine.
Yea...mileage? Ha...I hand figured my last tank in my 95 E350 box van and it was 7mpg. But, I love the power of a big block, even with 178K on her, it still gets. Oh...and it pulls stumps like nothin is back there!

I got 9mpg on my last tank with my1984 F250 Supercab with 4.10 rear and a C-6 trans. But then I recurved my dist. and added 3" exhaust to get it.
