Ok, So I'm a complete newb to diesels. I have a 99 250, no mods just lift. I bought it used with 35's on it, Double shock hoop's up front, dual steering stabil. It's automatic. Ok so background is done, here is the barrage of questions.
First off I haven't put an intake it yet, that's done the road. In the meantime I need to repl. the air filter. The one in it has a secondary cotton filter attached to the primary finned element. I ordered one today and it does not have that, it's a wix filter and just the finned element. I am going to run into any problems using that?
I have a hard start condition in the cold wheather. If I plug the truck in it doesn't happen but if I don't I have to repeatedly key it up for sometimes as long as a half hour to get it to fire. Once it does i get a ton of white smoke.
Recently I have noticed a decrease in power and harder trans shifts, kinda scared about that because I really don't even know where to begin with that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The filter you bought will work as well as any other in the stock filter box. None of them are terribly efficient as the lid is difficult to get to seal properly.
I would look at doing the "Kwik" mod instead of an intake. It is cheap and easy to do, and will filter much better than stock airbox.
Your hard start are most likely the GPRr (Glow plug relay). Go to NAPA, ask for part # GPR109, and change it out. Costs about $20, and only takes about 10 min to change.
Okay, then in that case I think you have some glow plugs that need replacing, as opposed to the glow plug relay.
I think the thread that cookie88 posted probably has instructions on testing the glow plugs with an ohm meter to find which are bad... but it's probably best to just replace them all while you're in there, since they're not that expensive.
