I read some old posts on this and do not have the $ to get the whole replacement unit so I need to get the rotors and get that ABS ring off. Is the best way to knock out the lugs and use them to drive off the ring or can I use a big 3 jaw puller somehow? If I use the 3 jaw puller I guess I would have to lay a piece of steel across were the grease seal is so the center bolt on the puller has somehting to put pressure on correct? Also, I guess The dpth that it goes back on is critical also? Thanks
I used a puller on my 94 when I changed the rotors, the ring isn't very hard to pull that way. I used a large socket in the center to push against, and the ring popped off with very little force required. Putting it back on went pretty easy too, just used a press to press it on, make sure it's straight and take your time.
I know money might be tight, but you'll be much happier if you buy the whole replacement rotor. If you don't, putting the rotor back on the hub is a huge pain, you'll warp the rotor for sure. You MUST have them turned before you install them if you go that route.
what kind of press do I need for the ring?I have changed rotors on my 89' in the past without warping them, but that one did not have the ABS ring to mess with.
I just used my hydraulic shop press to put the ring back on because it was handy, you can tap it back on with a hammer and block if you're careful and make sure you keep everything straight. Other than the ring, everything else should go just like your 89, not too bad a job.
