Egr

Greetings. I am migrating from the 7.3 forum to ask this quick question. What and Where is an EGR?

EGR-Exhaust Gas Recirculation. There is a valve in the intake manifold that allows a certain amount of exhaust gas into the intake to be burned again. This done to reduce NOx emmissions, and in the 6.0 to quiet the engine noise at idle. The ecm decides when and how long to open and close the valve. In the 6.0 there is pipe on the right side up pipe that routes a certian amount of exhaust into the egr cooler and than to the valve. EGR sucks but hey you got to love the EPA and california

is this comparable to the CCV on the 7.3 or does the 6 have its own type of CCV different from the EGR?

There is no egr on the 7.3. CCV-Crank Case Ventilation. This vents the crank case gasses into the intake pipe from the air cleaner to the turbo inlet. It works similar to a PCV valve in a gas engine.

I understand the CCV. But is the EGR and the CCV doing the basically same thing on just on different engines? Or are they two different beasts all together?

The CCV and EGR do suck in bad gases, for EPA reason EGR for exhaust and ccv for crankcase they are two different beast.

[QUOTE=dieseldoc]EGR-Exhaust Gas Recirculation. There is a valve in the intake manifold that allows a certain amount of exhaust gas into the intake to be burned again. This done to reduce NOx emmissions, and in the 6.0 to quiet the engine noise at idle.

Exhaust gas will not re-combust in the combustion chamber. Exhaust gas is inert. The purpose of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is to lower the combustion chambers temperature which reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Since the EGR valve is in the closed position during idle it plays no role in engine noise during idle.

The only way exhaust gases can flow into the intake is if the exhaust backpressure is higher than intake manifold pressure. The computer adjusts the VGT to provide the necessary backpressure when EGR flow is needed.

Many folks here think that disconnecting the EGR valve is a good thing I personally do not believe it is.

And where would that particular item be located on a 6?

looking from the front of the truck, its slightly left side next to where the intake hose goes into the motor. It has a small connector on the top of it,black top, rest of it chrome. There is egr flow at idle(sometimes up to 30%) the new reflash shuts off this flow after 5 minutes of idle time(the 6.0 doesnt get along with idle time)
