I have an '06 5.3. Is it normal for the a/c compressor to cycle on and off every 20-30 seconds? The clicking noise it makes when I am going down the highway is driving me crazy. Wanted to get some opinions before I went to dealer. Thanks.
It could be normal, my 04 does it at times. You need to see if your AC still blows cold in hot weather. If not and your still under warranty bring it in to the dealer and have them evac and recharge the system. They did that to mine and it blows colder then when I first got it. However its by no means the coldest AC system even when its working properly. I heard the 07 f150 is getting a bigger AC compressor to help in that area.
it is normal for it to cycle like that, it will cycle faster in max ac(recirculate) than in normal ac(fresh air), and it will cycle faster the slower the blower speed is. if it is blowing cold, then all is well, if it didn't cycle it would freeze the evaporator and you would loose ac
Be happy that it's cycling evrey 20-30 seconds... My 04 F150 5.4 cycles about evrey 7-10. I'm told by the dealer that is is perfectly normal. I half way wouln't mind the cycling if it made the cabin cold ... To bad is dosen't!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the cycling caused by a low pressure switch? Wouldn't it be running low on refrigerant? It's sounds like something is wrong. I just got my truck yesterday and here in Texas it's been extremely hot(about 104) and I noticed my compressor was making a different clatter than I'm used to. However it wasn't short cycling, or cycling at all. I would put it on max a/c and turn it all the way down, if it still short cycles have another dealer check it out. I haven't checked, but do these trucks have a sight glass? Thats the best way to tell if it's charged or not.
