you know what would be nice? keep in mind it will never happen. If Cummins, Cat, Detroit, and IH all built an engine for pickups. Then had driveline options,

Could you imagine the fun goind to you local Ford/GM/Dodge dealer and picking the engine/tranny combo you wanted?

Well said, except for the 444 part. There are two CPL# that actually where good. 1801 was one and I think the other was 1830. I drove one that was a real beast.

Be a huge step-down in power though. Road test after road test shows the Cummins is a chronic underachiever in the real world vs. the paper specs.

My brother in law was just told this, by supposedly someone in the know, who apparently isn't... but he wanted to argue with me when I told him these rumors are floating around. Also tried saying Dodge was going to Cat...

The dodge using a cat would make the most sense... However I think that a MB diesel would be a more likely solution. The sprinter diesel would work very well in the trucks... On second thought it'd probably break the transmissions like the cummins does.

Caterpillar has stated many times they have no desire to manufacture light truck diesel engines.

first off ya'll will never see a cat in a sd from the factory at least not in a long time for the main reason that cat doesn't want in to the light duty market as for a cummins thats a possiblity but like someone said they are putting money into things we wont see for 10 years

you had the option in the 90's of ordering the truck with the weak, anemic, P.O.S. cummins. it was so pathetic and underpowered that if you were not at a traffic light, you would cause an accident trying to pull out onto the road. . and that was in a utility body.

You can get them with Cat, Cummins and 6.0s...
We service a fleet of F-650 trucks that have 6.0 International engines in them. They're a little different than the pick-up truck engine, they hold about 20 litres of oil and use the same fuel bowl that the 7.3 used, but other than that they're basically the same. Other than the fact that they are dangerously underpowered.

Problem is the engine bay of an F-series SD may not like the length of the inline engine.
Cat's new ACERT engines are heavy and complicated. I love CAT, wore a CAT hat the bar tonight, but that's the truth.

The cummins is a good engine in the 2500 & 3500 dodge, but it needs a good transmission. without that, the engine is useless. the cummins 6.0 turbo pulls good mileage too. it gets almost as good as a 4.0L ranger.
