TorqueShift Issues

Hello Everyone,

2004 6.0L Ex w/37K

Recently it seems that on start up, when engaging to reverse or into drive...the trans will delay engagement, will kick in, then kick back out for a second and re-engage. Anyone had this issue and if so, is it an ECU problem or mechanical??

I am aware of a previous recall 04b24 which my truck fell under but to my knowledge, was not completed by the previous owner...do you think this would be linked to the issues I am having??

Any help is appreciated.

Sean

Actually there are a couple of recalls for this. You need to get into the dealer as one has already expired....unless it has been extended again.

Recall on 2004 TorqShifts:
Certain trucks built from 3-8-04 through 6-24-04 may experience a failure of the low/reverse planetary assembly. Specifically one or more of the planet gear pinion shafts may walk out of the carrier. If this occurs metallic contamination of the fluid will occur and will cause harsh or slipping shifts and/or harsh or delayed engagements in forward or reverse. Trucks affected by this recall will have the low reverse planetary replaced if no damage has occured, or will have the transmission overhauled and repaired as needed, along with replacement of the transmission cooler, if damage has occured.
This recall has been extended until 3-31-06
Customer Statisfaction Program 04B24.

Harsh or Delayed Forward or Reverse Engagement:
This could be caused by a sticking line pressure control (PC-A) solenoid. Typically the line pressure will be fluctuatiing wildly (up to 500 PSI!). To service, first remove and insdpect the external cooler line filter. If it contains fine gray metalic debris. If metal is found, the source is most likely a defective revese planetary pinion shaft that is coming out of the carrier and contacting the case or adjacent components. The transmission will need to be disassembled and repaired as needed or replaced. Broadcast Message 3250
If little or no debris is found replace the line pressure control solenoid with P/N 4C3Z-7G383-AA. Broadcast Message 1586/SSM 17874/18051
This repair will require removing the solenoid harness, so a new harness sealing o-ring (P/N 3C3Z-7Z276-AA) will need to be installed. In some cases the solenoid body will need to be removed from the trans to remove the harness and solenoid. In this case the solenoid body gasket (basic P/N 7C155, trans tag number needed) will be needed as well. Note: Do not loosen the 10mm head bolts on the solenoid body. Only loosen the 8mm head bolts.
If the solenoid has been replaced and the condition it still pressent, suspect a contamination issue of the solenoid or a sticking pressure relief valve.

It sounds like it couls be the reverse plan gear, but it could also be a solenoid sticking. I would have it checked by your deeler.

Angry The Saga Continues!!

OK,

so I finally got the X to the shop...come to find out that prior to my purchase back in Jan. and Feb. of '06 the 04B24 recall and solenoid assembly had been replaced.

I get a call from the service advisor and he says..."he is the barer of bad news...you need a new tranny in the crate for $4600 but it comes w/ a 3 year warranty!"

I say...what caused it and he says the tranny tech saw metal and broken pieces and said that the tranny was shot...and in order to find out what is wrong I need authorization for a complete tear down to find the cause which may or may not be the planetary assembly.

My question to the group do I gamble or look for an aftermarket tranny??

I am in a real spot and looking for help!!

Thanks,

Sean

If it is absolutely for sure gonna be on your dime, then I would look around. I can't recommend any specific tranny folks 'cause I have never had to deal with this before. Thank goodness.

But, I would push Ford a little harder. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Does anyone know if it is possible to find out if the issue is the panetary assembly/pin walking out of carrier without totally taking the tranny appart?? Should the tech be able to tel the cause of the metal shavings??

After a call to Ford customer care, they are still saying that there is no way to tell and I will need to pay to have them tear it apart and check...my fear is that they have it apart and it is in fact the planetary assembly or the solenoids which were both replaced in Jan/Feb of this year but they claim some other failure requiring me to pay for a new tranny on top of the cost to tear open the current tranny.

try a phone call to ford and ask for assistance as your 1 k out of warrenty and the trans ahd been worked on for this problem by the first owner with the recall done. maybe they will be good and meet you on a 50/50 deal .it's alway worth a phone call and try. if they dont yank it out and go to a tranie shop for maybe 2/3's of that amount.
the early t.s did have the problem they state in the tbs. and i have seen many here apart. that we have done . the shafts are poorly penned over to retain the shafts. when they do walk chances are high the case got hit and is worthless.
your down in fl. and i don't know any one there to help out, but the local speed shops should know the good ones near by you.
beefing them up there is nothing out yet other then the new upgraded stock parts, which seem to work ok. also when they put in a 05 or newer or upgraded to 05/06 specs tranie the pcm has to be reflashed, there is a tsb out about it. or they don't shift correctly.
good luck man

Actually, you are mistaken. TransGo has a shift kit and snap ring upgrade for the TS. I have them on 2 of my trucks, so far so good on both. THe second install was a result of the 'upgraded' snap ring from Ford still being junk and cracking the case again.

I didn't bother with the dealer fixing it the second time because of the obvious reasons. That truck has been down a total of a month now in 2 winters and I need it for plowing and salting, not waiting for new transmissions regularly.

If there is no hope of warranty, just pay to have a local shop do it, since you're not plowing with it, you should be OK.

Question For the Ford Techs

For any Ford tranny techs out there...got a question regarding a part....as you can see from above, after a long battle had to have the tranny rebuilt...they gave me credit on the items that were replaced in Jan/Feb but here is my question...

They are telling me that there are 2 different planetary gear assemblies...they credited me for part # FMC 5C3Z 7D006 D but then charged me for another gear assembly part # FMC 5C3Z 7D006 E. Are there in fact 2 planetary gear assemblies or is is the 'E' part an update.

Thanks in advance!
