i bought a 72 f100 shorbed today to use for a donor truck for my 49f1.it has a 302 and a fmx trans. i was hopeing to use a c4 but how do the fmx tranny's hold up. it also has a good 9inch rear end i will be useing. i went by the spec site and it show's the 72 year being 61 inch's as my 49 has the same width. is the fmx as good as the c4 and are they the same length. thank's , tracy
I run an FMX. My tranny guy swears by them and says they are considerably stouter than the C4. They are heavier than a C4 because the usually have an iron case instead of aluminum (Although there were a few aluminum-cased FMX's). Thay take almost exactly the same horsepower to run as a C4. My FMX has a shift kit and I run a warmed up 351C and a posi 9-inch. No problems. You will like it fine.
thanks' my tranny guy told me today he swears by then too.i am going to tow my new parts donor home tomorrow after work and start tearing it apart. tracy

Careful, remember to drop the driveshaft if you are towing it very far. You could only tow those old automatics 10 or 15 miles with the driveshaft turning or you would burn something out of the tranny.
