Sat radio help needed

Ok so I am in the middle of harewiring the sirius radio into my truck. I have the dash apart and the radio out. I bought the fm modual and a spare cig adapter. I wanted to see how the fm mod worked, so I pluged it in how I though it goes. I unplugged the factory ant out of the radio and plugged in the fm mod ant in there. Then I plugged the factory one into the fm mod. Then I plugged the small wire into the back of my sportster unit in the openning that says FM in or something like this. I turned the fm transmitter option in the menu and the radio lost the feed from the sat. I thought using this would send the signal thru the new lead I plugged in? Did I miss something here, I would like some help as I dont want to get too far in to this. Thanks.

Did you turn the FM transmitter on the Sportster off or on. You would need it to be on when using the FM modulator.

Ya it's on. I thougth that once you use the modulator you didn't use the transmitter. when I had the unit plugged in I changed the station it was set on and it lost the signal. I thought the way it work was it didn't use the radio stations. So you still have to have everything set the same way. The right station selected on both the truck radio and the sat radio and have the fm transmitter on. So the only differance is the sound quality and there should be no interfeacne coming thru. I didn't listen to it long enought to tell if it sounded better or not. I too it out so I'll have to take evrything back apart. That's ok I still have to find a power source behind the dash so I can free up the cigerette lighter. I was thinking of just spicing off the stock lighter outlet and hardwireing my spare lighter lead that I ordered. I don't think I'll need a fuse inline there as I never use the lighter. Well I'll take pictures once I'm done.
