I went to start up my 1988 F250 7.3L today and the ignition went all the way forward and acted like the igniton is broke. I have had some trouble with it but now it is shot. My dad told me he had to replace an ignition part in his 1987 F250 but he could remember what it was. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what was that part down in the column called? Advice, thanks
Here's a picture of the guts. I have never taken one apart(but will soon, I have one that is coming in broke), but from what I gather from the guys on here, it's something to do with the blown up part of the diagram. That would be the gear, or part of the actuator.
If you look at the diagram it may be the lower actuator. It is a white metal cast piece and mine broke a couple of months ago. Part is not to expensive but a little tricky to replace. When you turn the key the small rack pushes on the lower actuator which in turn pushes on the rod that connects to your ignition switch. While waiting for parts I disconnected the ignition switch from the rod and used a small srewdriver to start the truck.
Ok I have removed the steering wheel and the turn signal electronics.. The key was taken out like the book say. Not how do i get to the actuator. and the rod... I can not get the metal shroud where the key sits off. HELP
I think you are all the way to this point. I think you need to take 4 screws out and pull the whole end of the column off. Here's what I copied;
Remove the turn signal switch up and over the end of the column, but don't disconnect the wiring.
Remove the 4 attaching screws from the cover casting and lift the casting over the end of the steering shaft, allowing the turn signal switch to pass through the casting. The removal of the casting cover will expose the upper actuator. Remove the upper actuator.
Remove the drive gear, snapring and washer from the cover casting along with the upper actuator.
Clean all components and replace any that appear damaged or worn.
