Bogging Down

My 87 Ranger with the 2.3 and 5-spd is having trouble taking off from a stop. It seems to want to bog down, I have to really gas it to get the RPM's up to take off. It acts like it wants to die unless I really gas it. Any ideas?

I have had to fix several things lately, the last was a faultering low pressure fuel pump. After I put in the new pump I notice that the high pressure pump is pretty audible now. Also the fuel pressure is 40 psi at KOEO and 34 when the engine is running. Is that 34psi an acceptable level?

The fuel pressure numbers sound OK for that year and engine:

Is it tuned up properly? Plugs, wires, filters, etc.?

All the obvious stuff is fine; plugs, wires, etc. It kind of seems like my initial press of the gas pedal isn't recognized. I have checked the throttle cable and TPS and they are both fine and perfectly responsive. I just know that I shouldn't have to mash the pedal to get enough power to take off. It just kind of chokes a bit until I really hit it.

Have you checked your TPS with an analog volt meter for any breaks in the voltage output from KOEO idle to WOT? Also, the voltage with KOEO should be just under 1 volt. (best checked with a digital voltmeter)

Also, remember that fuel pressure at idle is much easier to achieve than fuel pressure with a load on the engine. Dirty fuel filter?

The TPS checks out and the fuel filter is pretty new.

You might check your EGR valve to see if it is sticking and also the idle bypass valve to see if it is clean. Pull the egr valve off and hook up a mighty vac pump and watch to see if it moves. Just easy checks.

Usually a problem under load is a misfire if it is ignition related and a bog if it is fuel related. Is the mass air meter clean? Brakes hanging up? You can simulate this same load at lower rpms in any gear. Does it bog then also or just off the line?

It seems less noticeable while driving, but still there to some degree when I shift. I know the EGR valve is ok, but I think I have a faulty EGR solenoid as there is a code present for that. I think that it just isn't opening the valve, but haven't found a way to test it yet. I guess I could just unhook the the vac line to the EGR and see if there is any difference. Also, the IAC seems ok.
