Please forgive my ignorance....Now, I am building a 2wd street modified. I have a mid 70's F250 with a 460/C6. We are going to keep those for spare parts. We just pulled a 460 (or so we thought) with a C6 out of an 84 Ford E350 Econoline Ambulance. When we cracked the motor it appears to have 30 over pistons. Does that mean that I actually have a 466? If so, great as I am sure it will get us a little more HP.
Also I need a new timing chain and I know that there are a few years that seem to be better. What year is that?
FTP: Not sure about the exact CID, but I doubt 6 additional CID will get you any noticeable upgrade.
The timing chain and gear set is another story though!
You need to get one for a '70 460 or 429, and believe me, it will really wake the engine up.

Unless you get real lucky any engine out of an ambulance is going to have had the living crap run out of it. And most ambulance companies go with the lowest bidder when they replace engines there is a question as to whether or not the bores were actually correct to begin with.
I would begin by mic'ing all the bores to make sure they are even still round, much less in any shape to accept replacement slugs.
Same goes for the tranny. The thing has obviously been run long or hard enough to require a replacement engine. Ambulances, by defined use, either sit around idling hot or running down the road being hammered for all they're worth. I highly doubt that the previous owners were conscientious enough to just go ahead and do a preventive tranny rebuild when they replaced the engine (much less keep it serviced properly). It's been run hard. It wouldn't surprise me if the tranny was well on its way to a major meltdown.
