saving fuel

Do they sell something to shut off a few cylinders, maybe # 1 and #5 to save on gas? I heard they do this on newer cars while on the highway. I just use my truck to go to the dump and will be plowing snow. What would happen if I disconnected the #1 and # 5 fuel injectors along with the two spark plugs?

It would run very poorly and set tons of codes. The newer vehicles are set up in the computer to do that, the older trucks can't handle it.

I was thinking if you made a plug in device to reprogram the computer to do this, on older trucks. So this can never happen, engine computer is to old?

For one thing, you'd be running unbalanced. Your engine would shake and shimmy, run terribly, and this would put added wear on the remaining 6 cylinders. A 302 is built and balanced for 8 and should stay that way.

Actually there is more to it than that. Modern "varible" displacement engines also disable intake valves when cylinders are shut down or you would not save much because of pumping losses (and nothing with a TBI style injection as you would actually loose here if valves were not shut down) If you disable evey other cylinder in firing order properly it will still run smoothly but power with drop a lot and under right condition you may see a MPG increase but remember that it still takes "x" amount og power to travel down the road and shuting down cylinders does not change that and the reduced displacement engine has to have enough power remaining to be able to provide it efficently otherwise MPG may actually decrease. Very large big block sytle engines in SUV would benifit from this more than a smaller motor.
