ECC Code 171
When I run the emc code readout on my 1994 Ford F-150 6 cylinder manual, I get code 171. The check engine light flashes on and off when the temperature outside gets above about 85 degrees F and the humidity is high. I have changed out the oxygen sensor with no success. I had the annual safety and emissions test and it passed with flying colors but the tail pipe is black with soot. Is the next step changing out the EMC unit?
The check engine light flashes at normal driving speed and may stay on for as as little as a few seconds or if the out side temperature is very hot, over 100 F, it may be on for 2 or 3 min.

171 is the heated gas oxygen sensor (HEGO) voltage signal not switching. part of the EGO sensor which is threaded into the exhaust manifold... other than this i can't find more specific info at this time
