towing help and performance

Just two questions:
1. What are the towing limits on a 88 Bronco2,2.9 auto trans?\
2. Are there any bolt on type performance out there that actually work? (headers, chips, etc.)
Thanks,
Cam

Answer #1) I have no idea.
Answer #2) Of course. You could bolt on headers, put in a free flowing filter for your air and do other upgrades (ie. port and polish) and then chip your engine for a lot more performance out of these. However I recommend a motor swap. The 4.0 has a lot more potential and will also bolt up to your stock A4LD tranny (your auto tranny) without a problem. Just my .02

Real world, 1500 pounds, though I have to check my Ford data sheets, I think Ford recommends not towing with them at all.

(headers, chips, etc.)

Chips, headers, and exhaust all work. I have not seen headers yet that were true bolt ons. Search on my user name and about adjusting the gas pedal cables for a performane gain. A lot of sluggishness is slack cables.

Bolt on the larger throttle body works.

I believe JBA headers are true bolt ons, but they're a lot of money. For the price of JBA's you could swap in an OHV 4.0 lol.

Could I pick your brain about the cable adjustments since you seem to be a person with many talents evident by the numerous posts. It would take me awhile to sift through all of those. I also read that a tb off a 86 or 87 Bronco would work since they are larger. What do you think? One more question. What is a maf sensor?
Thanks,
Cam

Use the advanced search feature with keywords "+throttle +pedal +cable" which would pop up at least this thread

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...le+pedal+cable

MAF = mass air flow sensor.

It is worth doing and they are larger.

I believe the TB on the 88-90 2.9's are 58mm and on the 86 and 87 it's 65mm.. I don't remember the exacts, but I believe that's right. It will allow a lot more air to pass through due to it's bigger size, so.. go for it!

bigger isn't always better. Do we know if the larger TB really helps?

It gives more high end power, and I've heard it gives more grunt in the lower RPM's. Several people on here have installed the bigger one and they said they could tell a little difference. You also have to think, as you upgrade other things, that little bit more air can help out all of it giving a bigger gain.

I have looked the power bands over the only advantage the 4.0 really has ove the 2.9 is low end torque. which headers can take care of a lot of it. 4.0 are nice i have driven them but they have no where near the high end power of the 2.9. I'm building my 2.9 up and gave up on engine swaps to expensive and time comsuming for me. I did find a four valve 2.9 that i would of swapped in but couln't find a computer.
