Hi all::
Has anyone used Keith Black pistions?? I would like to try the kb 150 .030 over set.
They are relieved with a wedge, and have +40 CC on top. I would like to keep the comp around 10 t0 1 , and the deck hieght with the stoch pistions was about .005. 1966 block. the heads are c0ae-c. with some stock removed around the exhaust valve, cj valves, so maby 74cc. and i would like to use the 941 cam that is talked about here. can i ues them or will this thing ping it self to death??
Yeah I've used Kieth black pistons. Had one lose a ring land at 8000 in a 302. It was great. The aluminum bent 9 valves and cost me more to put the engine back together than it did to build it in the first place. Ordered a single replacement piston so I could just slap the engine back together and sell it and the new piston was different. Turns out they changed the design because the valve relief was too deep and resulted in a WEAKENED RING LAND! After fighting with Summit and the KB people I lost. Definately put a bad taste in my mouth about the KB pistons and I've heard nothing but complaints about the KB's holding up under street/strip conditions. I'd go forged for an engine that will see higher RPM's. I have silvolite hypereutectics in my truck 390 that work great, but they weigh a ton and probably wouldn't be great for a high revving engine plus the cost of mallory in the crank.
The KB150 will result in too low of compression for what you want.
Take a look at the TRW L2291 forged piston. I've got a set in my 390. I recently had an exhaust valve weld itself to the guide. The piston then slammed it back up a ways in the guide. The valve was slightly bent. Other than a small scratch on the piston though, no harm done! If there was ever a bulletproof piston, this is it!
At 10:1 with the 941 cam, it will most likely require premium.
