I'm tempted to call BS on that one. Never heard of 4.0Ls, especially highly geared 4x4s, getting anywhere near that...
Some last the life of the vehicle, others don't make it a hundred grand. It's an up in the air sorta thing. I don't know of a set life for one. If it's erratic, or doesn't read at all, then it's probably bad.

Filled up today -- 21.79mpg. You have no authority to call bs on me. Also, some sending units go bad after 2,000 miles. Since I originally replaced mine I have went through 2 more.....in 2 years. But seriously, don't call bs unless you know what you're talking about. The next time I fill up I will take pictures of the gas pump's reading, my tripometer's reading, my calculations done on my cell phone or calculator and the final number. Something about calling bs on me is really irritating b/c you have absolutely no idea what my driving style is or even where I drive. That is just too funny.
where is the post on how to clean the maf sensor...im getting almost as bad of mpg as he is. i went back to the stock aircleaner intake and with 66000 miles on the clock its time for new plugs. i put a new fuel filter in 500 miles ago and am running mobil 1 5w30 with a gibson catback ,and a superchips programmer set on the 87 octane setting due to the price of gas.but i have the stock 245/75/16 bfg ta and am getting 17-18 on the highway. we have no city driving here its mostly rural driving we only have 2 lights in town
take the MAF off and spray it down with Electrical parts cleaner, they should have it at your local auto parts store. I clean my maf everytime i clean my K&N since it's halfway off anyways, and i live near the beach in So Cal and it gets kinda corraded fast. I also clean the throttle body every 25k when i replace the fuel filter, and every time i change the oil i dump a bottle of the black bottle STP concentrate into a full tank of gas to keep the injectors clean. My tires are 235 75 15, which are up from the stock 225 70 15's, I have a 2002 XLT 3.0 5-speed 3.73 gears and i get 23 MPG on the highway regularly cruising 75 mph.
I have a 04 4x4 4.0 5-speed with 4:10 gears and 32" tires, I get 22-23 mpg highway, and even hit 24 once. I have alot of engine mods as well, and I run synthetic fluids. I'm greased pleased with my mpg. Thats why I knew there had to be something wrong with Dave's truck, 12 mpg was way way too low for a cammer 4.0.
Well, I'm going to clean the MAF again, and replace the water temp sensor. I will also check the plugs, but they should be fine as they were replace in fall, along with the plug wires. I would be more than happy to get 16, if I can't get it to improve, then I will be selling it and getting a 2wd 2.3L Ranger.

Well, I just got 17mpg, and I have a few mods planned in the future, so hopefully it will get better.
That sounds alot better Dave, around town I get 18-19 mpg with mods, synthetics, and a manual trans, so thats about where you should be at this stage. An electric fan would be a big help for gaining alittle mpg, and it will free up a few more ponies. The programer also has a mpg as one of the programs. I used the mpg program once on a trip to W,Va, thats when I hit 24 mpg, but I mostly run the hp, or torque programs, I would rather have the power, and the mpg is still pretty good.
I kinda started to really watch my MPG's recently. Especially when I bought my Scan Gauge. I went from 17-19 MPG to 20-24 MPG. All from watching the TPS percentage (17 at idle and I only push it to 23). I have a 01 4.0 5-sp 4x4 4.10, with a few mod's (E-fan Bamaprogrammer, tonneau cover). I'd bet I could gain some if I took out my tool box and took off the grille guard.

Actually, 17-18mpg is probably the best I will get. I drive like a... well, you get the point. I'm very satisfied with 17mpg. The other truck I had was a 01 Dodge 2wd reg cab with a 5.9 V8. I would regularly get only 11mpg. On a good day. My father has the same truck except his is a 94 with 179K miles and he gets about 18mpg. It has a lot to do with driving habits. So when I got 12 mpg with my Ranger, and they claimed as much as 20, I knew my driving was not that bad. But anyway, it's all ok now.
I have a 94 with the 4.0 that I purchased from my brother-in-law. He only drove it back and forth to work, only 10 mins. from his house. It was getting 15 mpg when I first got it. Then I started running it to my job which was 45 mins. away at highway speeds. Slowly the milage came up and topped out at 22 mpg. Must have blown out all the crap! Still getting almost 21 mpg.
Holy old thread, Batman! Well, since someone else revived it, I might as well update. I have since switched to synthetic engine oil and saw a 1mpg increase. I have also switched from mud tires to all terrain tires. Lately I have only been averaging 15mpg, but we will see how the new tires work out.
took the ranger on a 4 day road trip this weekend and was suprised heading east with the wind and cruise set on 75 to 80 i got a suprisingly 20-21 mpg from sw missouri to chicago. and coming back well i was back to my normal 16.5......Also took off my volant cai and aem filter cause of the amount of dirt i have been finding in the intake hose and went back to the stock intake.and will go with my superchips programmer and the big exhaust and see how that does...im on the fense about wether to put the volant back on or not ........the mobil 1 seemed to get dirty real quick this time too.
incase anybody is wondering i have a 01 kingcab 4.0 auto 4x4 245/16 bfg etc
Did you have the filter sealed well, I have a simular set up and I haven't noticed any dirt in the air tube. I also use mobil 1 and change it every 5,000 miles, I've used it for years, I believe it to be a great oil. Whivh AEM filter are you using, the cotton gauze or the dryflow. I get 22/24 with since putting on the mods and running synthetics in the whole drivetrain. I have a manual tranny, I'm sure that helps. Were you in a strong head wind on the way back, that 21 mpg on the way there sounds great, but the 16.5 on the way backs isn't so great.
