I've been looking around for a tonneau cover for the bed. I've noticed Mid fifties has two type for about $150. One is a snap on, which requires holes to be drilled and the other a velcro application that wraps underneath the bed rails. Anyone have recommendations on which way to go or other suggestions, ideas?
If a soft tonneau is really what you want, either will work. I personally hate the snaps. I had them on numerous sports cars and aside from replacing them frequently, they were just difficult to snap and unsnap. In fact, I just usually threw the tonneau over the steering wheel and called it quits. The velcro might be a better plan.
If cost is the reason you are thinking soft tonneau, I made mine for well under $150. I also overdesigned it, so if I was to redo it, it would cost less today. I chose a hard tonneau for the security of it. Anyone can unsnap the tonneau and check out your stuff. I now have the biggest trunk I've ever had.
I'd be glad to help you make a hard tonneau if you want. We're practically neighbors.
53, thanks, I've seen Randy's and it's probably strong enough for me to stand on and looks really nice. I'm thinking about just going with the soft version so I can remove it if I don't want it on without having someone help me. I have the fiberglass one on my 98 F150. Although it's nice, I really can't load anything with size because the top won't lower, it's not difficult to remove, but requires at least 3-4 people. I may go with an upholsterer and I've seen some covers made of a very stiff fabric that is waterproof and that looks great also. Randy's is a little more involved than I want to go and requires welding etc. I also don't want to go with the snaps on the side of the bed rails. I know..... I'm picky. LOL... I'm not putting Randy's lid down, it's just not the way I want to go at this point. LOL..... Randy and I must of posted at the same time. LOL..... I appreciate the offer in helping me and will take you up on the offer if I decide to go with the hard tonneau. Anyone using the velcro type covers?
Ed, I had a soft one made for $130 with the snaps with the snaps mounted below the bed roll so you can't see them. There's a place next to Johns fun one hundred named seats. Let me know. You can also go the velco way but after awhile it comes off. On the trip to Tenn I've seen some nice covers from hard to soft and the best I have seen was made by *******.
I am also interested in the experience with a soft tonneau with velcro. I have a soft tonneau with velcro on my 2003 Ranger that I really like however it has crossbars sewed into the fabric with rail systems on the bed ides. It would not work on our trucks. So who out there has done the soft cover with velcro?
Our company makes soft tonneaus with Velcro. On the Lo Profile and Original Truxedo's the Velcro on the side rail is bonded to a plastic piece that slides in a channel on the rail, so you don't have to worry about it coming off. On the Truxport the Velcro is glued to the side rail, but it also has screws at the front and back that help hold the Velcro in place.

Thats cool, but as far as I know they won't fit anything as old as our trucks. I thought they stopped at 73 for all models.
Actually, we custom make covers for classic trucks and trucks with toolboxes. There is a box detail sheet that you can get from our website (under the FAQ section where it asks about toolboxes). Just fill that out and give it to your dealer. There is usually a one week lead time to custom make a cover. You can view some classic trucks with covers on them on our website.
I couldn't find the classic truck picture on the website. The cover looks nice. I checked on a dealer and the closest to me is 60 miles away. Thanks for the info anyways. No offense, but I'd start including classic trucks in your inventory. ******** is making a fortune right now. Smart move on his part.
You can view the classic trucks in the gallery which is on the top of the page all the way to the right. You're right, I think there is a big market out there for the classic trucks. I'll make sure management hears about your suggestion. We don't sell direct from the factory, so we don't have much control over the actual price you pay for the covers. There is a lot of competitive pricing out there.
I found the classic truck pic- thanks. I do like that cover, very clean. That beige on the purple truck wouldn't be my choice of color, but the cover looks and fits very good. I may have to give this dealer a call and get some prices. Thank you. Ed
