OK folks, I have a strange problem here (at least it's strange to a novice like myself). 1993 E150 5.0L... Well it goes a little something like this. I can drive around from place to place all day long, stopping and starting many times. Then at some point I come out of a store and go to start the van and NOTHING! Doesn't even crank... you can hear the fuel pump, all lights etc. work fine, just doesn't even try to start. I pop the hood, disconnect then reconnect the battery and it starts right up as if nothing had happened. Any ideas on what I'm dealing with?
When it first died on my I thought it was simply the battery as it was a pretty old battery. So I replaced the battery and the clamps on the cables... then it died again a couple weeks later and that's when I just decided to disconnect and then reconnect the battery. Sorry about that... I guess I should have mentioned that about the battery and cables at first.
It sounds like you have bad cables. I'd check the connections at the solenoid and the starter. The next thing to do is make sure that you're getting 12 volts to the S terminal on the solenoid when the key is in the start position. If that checks out ok, then check to see if you have battery voltage at the big wire from the solenoid to the starter. If you do you need a starter, if not it's time for a new solenoid.
