I have a 1976 F-100 2WD It has a 302 ci. (It's a grease ball). The freeze plugs are rusted out of it.It went from every day driving to 4 years of sitting.
I also have a 1979 E-150 Club Wagon Van.It has a 351ci. Runs super.
I want to put the 79 351 into the 76 F-100 I also want to use the manuel 3 sp. Transmition in the F-150 The 79 351 has an automatic.
engine will drop in without a problem. You'll need to get a manual flywheel and pilot bearing. also make sure the oil pan on the 351 sumps in the front. exhaust will need to be swapped too. Now the question is, is it a 351M, or 351W? the W can use the current 302's bellhousing, the 351M's will need the bigger bolt-pattern bell. the engine mounts will need to be that of the engine. One last thing which may or may not be needed, is the fuel pump. The fuel pump may need to be changed too, due to location of the steering box. all in all, not too hard. P.S: you'll need to identify whether your truck has points or duraspark, and you'll need to match the radiator to the 351.
I have been building stock-cars and street rods for 22 years. I have a 85 S-15 with a 355ci. with the 400 turbo auto. I know about my GM's. Ford is a forign launguage to me. This 76 F100 short bed is my first old Ford I've missed with. With the exception of my dads 46 Ford coupe. But even there, we fit it with a 350 chevy engine & 76 Nova SS rear end and Corvette wheels. That one is a real show stoper !!!!! The 302 needs pulled out for the freeze plug inst. I just wanted to know if I would have anything to gain with the 351W over the 302 Science it is going to have to work for its keep. (Easy labor like pulling car trailers, parts runner, grocerie getter, ect.)
